The way we workout is constantly evolving. From wearable sports gizmos to ballet lessons in your living room, there’s no excuse not to be active in 2017. Whatever workout you’re looking for, you’ll find it somewhere. Here’s what to watch out for in 2017…


Get techy

The wearable tech trend isn’t going anywhere - and a new year calls for brand new fitness gadgetry. We’ve moved beyond watches and onto clothing and accessories - developers have even embedded trackers into sports bras, sending data to the wearer’s phone post-workout.

You’ll see plenty of monitoring going on in gyms and even be able to monitor and compare your own performance and stats against others - even being able to compete against the likes of Usain Bolt and Serena Williams.


Put a ‘P’ in it

We’re big fans of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) at Holmes Place. It’s one of the best ways to train and condition the body. But what about PHIIT? The ‘p’ stands for pilates and by combining the two workouts you get the best of pilate’s toning and core strengthening, with the ultimate cardiovascular workout of HIIT - providing a perfect all-round fitness class.


Zumba forever

The funky, vibrant atmosphere of the Rio Olympics has only fuelled our love of Zumba - and 2017 is likely to see the carnival-inspired dance class staying high on our fitness favourites. With the average person burning around 600 to 1,000 calories in one Zumba class (without even realising due to having such a good time) there’s no reason this Latin American fat-blaster won’t stick around for many years to come.


The simple life

Sweating goes back to basics. After a boom in hybrid classes, mixing several different workout styles at once, we’ll see a return to the basics of fitness in 2017. Simple workout gear such as the TRX is rising in popularity, giving users the ability to sculpt their body and burn fat from every angle with one piece of kit.

You’ll also see a lot more workouts specifically devised for the older generation, improving strength and balance while keeping joints mobile with functional fitness; improving overall fitness with proven workout methods.


Take it outside

Working out outdoors pumps up the endorphins, boosts our exposure to vitamin D and has been shown to improve motivation - making us work out harder and for longer. Outdoor events have soared in popularity - and 2017 is guaranteed to bring more and more fresh-air challenges like this.

We predict that 2017 will also be the year of Parkour - a total body workout that involves running and jumping over and through obstacles. Currently huge in America, it won’t belong before it hits Europe too.



Embracing these new training trends in 2017 won’t just make the gym a lot more fun, you’ll also see different parts of your body changing and impressive results in the long run. Mixing up your routine is the best way to keep motivated through your fitness schedule - so which crazes will you be getting on board with in the new year?
